Tom Hanks's son Chet wants to go into the family business -- but not in the way you'd expect! Chester "Chet" Hanks, a 20-year-old sophomore at Northwestern University, is pursuing a career in hip-hop, as the world found out this week when he released his single "White and Purple." The aspiring rapper composed the song (which references Northwestern's school colors) about his life at college: it contains lines about such collegiate activities as studying, picking up girls, and hanging out at the frat house. Listen below!
Chet, the older son of Hanks and Rita Wilson, goes by the hip-hop alias "Chet Haze." He tells the Washington Post that he's absolutely serious about turning his music into a career -- even though he knows he's not typical hip-hop material.
"I thought, oh you know, I don't know if I could ever do this," Chet admits. "I'm not from the 'hood. I'm not a gangster. I'm a white kid from the suburbs. Recently, over the past few years, with the emergence of other great MCs who share more similar backgrounds to me, I started to realize... I have talent. Who says that you have to fit all the characteristics of being from the hood to rap?"
So what does his Oscar-winning father think of his son's life goal? Chet says that Tom has been very supportive, even though he doesn't share his son's passion for hip-hop.
"I've spent a lot of time trying to show him a lot of the music that inspires me," says Chet. "And he does keep an open mind."
Well, we guess kids are like a box of chocolates -- you never know what you're gonna get! In fairness, Chet also admits he's interested in acting -- a subject that his father (and mother, and half-brother Colin Hanks) know a little more about.
